Hi Linc. great post and spot on. I must say that I love Linux and have met some very intelligent folk using it, people whose technological knowledge I very much admire but then they go and shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to digs at Christians. I too tend to be quiet about my faith. Something in my gut tells me that maybe the best path is to show your skills, earn respect (without compromising Jesus) and then when the opportunity arises speak into the situation with conviction. You will still get ignorant comments but hopefully not from the illuminati.

You are correct. I have since found out that the flash player behaves nicely in the 64-bit version, unlike with Ubuntu 9.10. The problems I had were related more to a flaky connection than problems with flash itself, so I do stand corrected on that issue.

Hey PCGuy, not sure if flash comment is right. I used the following tar file libflashplayer-latest_closed_beta.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz and flash works fine in firefox now. My main gripes are that ubuntu one is flakey, it won't work behind a proxy. Also I get a random annoying screen flicker. Also can't get pptp client to work for me. Otherwise it's great.

You have touched on so much that I would need a week to address it all. For me it's simple. The Christian way is not easy and when ever someone who really doesn't want to follow that path has the chance to take a swipe at it they do. Why? Because the more they swipe at it the more "imperfect" it become in their eyes which allows them to stop following the path. I.e. they can do what they want without "worrying" whether it's right or wrong. Eliminate the "respect" factor and the rest is easy to ignore.

BTW, God never said it would be easy following his way. ;-)

I completely understand where you are coming from Linc as I have experienced the same thing. In fact, I have tended to downplay my faith as a result, which is probably the wrong thing to do. As hard as it sometimes is, we have to remember that our sufferings pale in comparison to that our Lord went through. He told us it would be hard, and indeed it is, especially in today's world of secularism and moral relativism. I think we just have to show by example that, with God's grace, we can absorb these taunts and insults and be stronger for it.

I'm not 100% sure. I know that most of the people I've talked to with this problem either upgraded from Vista or did a completely fresh install from a purchased version of 7 rather than a version that came with a system. Perhaps since most preinstalled versions overwrite the entire disk when a full system restore is done, the boot configuration may be different than with the regular retail version. I'm just guessing, though.

Strange. Is this a problem only with newly-installed Windows 7 versions? I bought a Windows 7-preinstalled 64-bit laptop and used a Linux Mint LiveCD to create a dual-boot configuration with the two OS's (the LiveCD automatically did all the partitioning and setup for the dual-boot, so I didn't really have to do anything manually). It works fine. I have installed only one or two programs on Windows 7, but it hasn't complained. Admittedly, I almost never use it, as I have no programs that require Windows that won't run on wine, and only keep it around as a novelty. But it's never complained about anything like this.

I certainly understand and agree with your frustration. I, too, am so tired of people who call themselves Christians who choose to propagate such false teaching. Do I believe that we could be nearing the end? Absolutely. Then again, it could be another century or two off. Nobody knows, and that is a fact. Don't believe me? Read the Bible. Neither the Mayans, nor Nostradamus, nor anyone else using various forms of divination can tell us the date and time it will be.
"Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. But that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father." (Mark 13:31-32)
The Great Commission was not "Go ye therefore and figure out when I'll be returning and the world will end." While reading Revelation and study of the end times is important, (it's in the Bible, after all,) it is there so our eyes can be open to the signs and to remind us that time here is limited and we are to be about His work, which is to "Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit." (Matthew 28:19)
